The New York District performs periodic surveys throughout our. In 2015, they worked on a dredging harbor improvement project around Houston, Texas. Army Corps of Engineers is responsible for reporting the conditions of Federally maintained navigation channels. In 2009, for example, they were contracted to dredge up 1.8 million cubic yards of material from harbor channels in Baltimore, according to the company’s website. DCA represents the dredging industry on key issues before Congress and is an active partner to the U.S. Weeks Marine has completed dredging projects around the country. Bids will be put out for each part of the project. The port, meanwhile, will continue to work on next steps, which include deepening and widening the inner harbor. The EPA has already signed off on the disposal site, which has been used in the past for dumping of dredged materials, Vick said. The port will then be able to give the green light to Weeks Marine to start in January or hopefully earlier, Vick said. She expects the EPA to accept it by the end of October.
The port submitted a plan to the EPA detailing how much dredging material from construction will go to the Dam Neck Ocean Disposal Site, located three miles offshore from Virginia Beach, Vick said. In Virginia, the Environmental Protection Agency has to review part of the plan before dredges can go in the water, said Cathie Vick, the port’s chief development and government affairs officer.
